Happy 15th Birthday Xavier Media!

I guess most of ou didn't have a clue, but this is actually the 15th birthday of Xavier Media! On the 3rd of December 1996 Xavier Media was registered as a company and officially started its business.

One of our first web sites was XavierMail.com which offered free email accounts, and it's still live. You can get your very own @xaviermail.com address.

One of the things I'm mostly proud of is the environmental engagement we do both via our actions in the daily life and also via the investments we do in our site XavierMedia.org. We only have one planet and we have to use it visely.

Xavier Media® Photos

We've now officially launched our own photo web site where we will post some photos which we use on our blogs and other web sites as article thumbnails (like for example at XavierMedia.com where the first blog post got a big picture called "Featured").

Some of th themes we use for sites and blogs like at XavierMedia.com or at this site, got a big picture above the blog posts and if no other picture is selected when the blog post is published a random image from XavierMedia.dk is used instead of just a blank box. It's a little bit more fun with a picture from one of the places we've visited then just a blank box, don't you agree?

Most of these photos have been taken by me (Andreas) for Xavier Media, so you're welcome to use the photos yourself on your web site as long as you give me and Xavier Media credit for it . The pictures are free for commercial use too, as long as credit is given to both me and Xavier Media. Here's some example code you can use for the credits:

IE6 no more

3700 people in UK is asking the UK government to replace IE6 as the web browser when people surf on external pages. This will put some pressure on most of the other European countries to start similar campaigns to replace IE6 or use other web browsers when surfing externally. Google has also announced earlier this week that they will remove support for IE6 in Google Docs, Google Sites and Gmail later this year. One of the reasons for these kinds of campaigns are the security issues involved in using old and out-dated web browsers.

On XavierMedia.com about 25% of the users are using a version of Internet Explorer an as much as 30% of them are using IE6. To encourage all the users of IE6 we're adding a text at the top of most of our pages letting them know that they're using an old and out-dated web browser. The users with IE6 will be suggested 4 updated web browsers: Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer 8 and Chrome.

At the same time as we're asking users to upgrade to a newer web browser with much fewer security issues, we will also stop testing our web projects in IE6. This means that if you use IE6 you may or may not be able to use our services in the future.

If you as a web developer, blogger or web site owner also would like to add the same message box asking people with old web browsers to update you can find the code you need at IE6 no more.com. They have codes for several languages like for example English, Spanish and Swedish. Users with new web browsers will of course not have to see the message box at all since it will only show when people with IE6 visit your site.

Blog Action Day: Climate Change

Today it's time for the yearly Blog Action Day when bloggers should write about the same subject. The subject for 2009 is Climate Change and Xavier Media Group is of course writing about that today.

At XavierMedia.com you can read about web hosting powered by renewable green energy (like for example energy produced by wind power plants). By selecting a web hosting company that powers their servers a "green" way you reduce the CO2 impact on the environment.

Our other blog XavierMedia.org is writing about how Xavier Media is saving money by only using energy produced by wind power plants at the office. To save money at the same time as you reduce the need for CO2 produced energy is a great way of doing some change.

If you have a blog and haven't joined Blog Action Day it's still not too late, you can still write about climate change!
